Equations were derived permitting the treatment of shocks which occur
in longitudinal-transverse waves propagating in thin magnetic flux tub
es. Such waves usually lead to kinks which may grow into oblique shock
s. The kink angles between the shock and the tube directions are found
to be symmetrical with respect to the shock. Purely longitudinal shoc
ks occur only in special cases of high symmetry or of well defined pro
pagation conditions. Wave calculations were performed which show the f
ormation of oblique shocks. We also discuss recent suggestions that th
e basic equations for the treatment of longitudinal-transverse waves a
re incomplete.
