The kinetics and equilibria for the displacement of pyridine from the
[Pd(SNS)(py)](2+) cation (SNS=2,6-bis(methylthiomethyl)pyridine) by wa
ter and chloride ion have been studied in acid and basic aqueous solut
ions. The role of the SNS ligand in bis-cationic complexes of Pd(II) h
as been discussed in terms of its pi back-bonding properties versus tr
identate sp(3) nitrogen donors (NNN). The kinetics and equilibria meas
urements performed at two different ionic strengths allow a direct com
parison between different substrates.
