Abstract
Along Track Scanning Radiometer-1 (ATSR-1) data of part of the Acre St ate in Brazil were examined with a view to assessing their potential u se for the detection of clearings within dense humid tropical forests. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery as a reference, a comparis on of ATSR-1 and NOAA-11 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVH RR) images obtained within a day of each other indicated that the depi ction of large forest clearings was better defined both spectrally and spatially on the ATSR-1 imagery than on that of the AVHRR. The reason s for these findings are discussed.
