M. Haake et al., FALSE-POSITIVE SONOGRAPHIC HIP EXAMINATIONS IN NEWBORNS WITH CONGENITAL VARUS DEFORMITY OF THE PROXIMAL FEMUR, Archives of orthopaedic and trauma surgery, 114(5), 1995, pp. 274-277
In cases of congenital varus deformity of the proximal femur, the scre
ening of hip dysplasia can lead to misinterpretations. The false-posit
ive ultrasound result is caused by the superiorly displaced greater tr
ochanter in hips with coxa vara, which narrows the scan window. In thi
s paper three typical patients are presented to demonstrate that the u
se of additional non-standard views cannot exclude hip dysplasia in al
l cases. Hence, such patients with femoral abnormalities and doubtful
sonographic findings should be further evaluated by arthrography or ma
gnetic resonance imaging to rule out additional hip dysplasia.
