We have demonstrated a Mendelian pattern of inheritance for a TaqI res
triction fragment length polymorphism in the human progesterone recept
or gene in a single Irish pedigree. The polymorphism has been identifi
ed as an insertion in intron G of the human progesterone receptor gene
and a routine polymerase chain reaction assay has been developed for
its detection. The distribution of the polymorphic alleles displays si
gnificant (P < 0.05) deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in brea
st cancer patients.
