Abstract
A new parameter b characterizing covalent behaviour of 4f orbit has be en developed on the basis of spectral properties of trivalent lanthani des and used to tested the interaction between 4f electrons and ligand s for many of the lanthanides compounds. The factors influencing coval ent bonding and changing law of covalency have been discussed by the n ew parameter.
