The marine sponge Agelas clathrodes was analyzed for glycosphingolipid
s, and four cerebrosides (1a-4a) were isolated, each as a mixture of h
omologs. The structure of the new glycosphingolipid la was elucidated
by extensive NMR studies of its peracetate and by chemical analysis. T
he presence of unusual alpha-glycosphingolipids in sponges of the genu
s Agelas was confirmed.
