The formation of the muonium (Mu = mu(+)e(-)) atom in solid nitrogen v
ia convergence of thermalized positive muons (mu(+)) and electrons has
been studied using the technique of muon spin rotation. Both the magn
etic and electric field dependences of the muonium and diamagnetic sig
nal amplitudes demonstrate an enormous difference in electron transpor
t in alpha and beta phases of solid nitrogen. Electron drift mobilitie
s in these phases have been shown to differ by about five orders of ma
gnitude, probably owing to the orientational nature of the phase trans
ition in solid nitrogen.
