Abstract
Release of endotoxin from bacteria occurs more with some antibiotics t han with others. The effect of salicylate on antibiotic-associated end otoxin release was measured in culture supernatants by the Limulus ame bocyte lysate assay. Salicylate reduced endotoxin release by antibioti cs significantly. As an adjunct to antibiotic therapy, salicylate may reduce the incidence of endotoxic shock, and may also add to the syner gy of imipenem/aminoglycoside combinations.
