The electrochemical noise (ECN) method was used to evaluate the protec
tiveness of five alkyd primers containing various inhibitive pigments
applied to steel panels. A navel experiment was used to monitor specim
ens immersed in dilute Harrison's solution and 2 M sodium chloride. Bl
istering occurred in the sodium chloride environment and was related t
o changes in the ECN parameters. These results were compared with thos
e for identical systems put through cyclic salt spray and hot salt bat
h accelerated tests. Generally, the work established ECN lest techniqu
es for future evaluation of multicoat organic systems.
