Hallux varus occurs most frequently as result of excessive surgical co
rrection of musculoligamentous imbalance around the metatarsophalangea
l (MTP) joint of the great toe (lateral release and medial capsuloliga
mentous tensioning). If untreated, the condition may lead to motion lo
ss and degenerative arthritis. In this series, 14 cases of hallux varu
s were treated. Medial arthrolysis was done in each case. In five case
s, reconstruction of the lateral ligament (with a 1.5-mm Ligapro sutur
e), using a new technique, accompanied the medial release. Arthrodesis
of the MTP was done in nine cases treated when there was already stif
fness and arthrosis. According to a 100-point scoring system, the resu
lts were excellent in 56% and good in 44% of the MTP joint arthrodesis
cases. Results were excellent in 100% of the mobilizing technique cas
es using Ligapro suture.
