New revelations about Russian accidental as well as purposeful dumping of substantial quantities of high-level radioactive waste, weapons an d reactors into the marine environment has caused an acceleration of s tudies into the environmental impact of these activities and a renewed search for international solutions and cooperation for the management of radioactive waste, This contentious and complex problem carries st rong potential for contradictions and will necessarily result in signi ficant joint scientific, technological, political and economic researc h, Some of the most difficult aspects of this legacy of the Cold War w ill be dealt with in this report.
