Natural frequencies of tapered plates with edges elastically restraine
d against rotation and translation are studied by using boundary chara
cteristic orthogonal polynomials in the Rayleigh-Ritz method and apply
ing the Rayleigh-Schmidt method. The two methods used are quite genera
l and can be used to study plates with any combinations of boundary co
nditions, thus obtaining interesting technical results. Since such com
binations of boundary conditions, along with specific values for the s
tiffness constants for the restraints are prohibitively large in numbe
r, results are presented for only a few cases.
