A two dimensional position sensitive parallel plate detector, with an
active area of 10 X 8 cm(2), was developed for heavy ion reaction stud
ies. Position signals are extracted by using a non-standard compact de
lay-line, which allows saving dead spaces. The timing (less than or eq
ual to 280 ps) and position (1 mm in X, Y) resolutions of the detector
make it a useful device for kinematic coincidence studies. Moreover,
due to its mechanical construction, it is well suited for the implemen
tation of a 4 pi structure to be built e.g. in the inner space of a Ge
-array.
