Abstract
This article discusses neuroanatomic and neurophysiologic bases for lo w back pain. Evidence for the existence of pain generators in facet, d isc, muscle, nerve roots, and dorsal root ganglia are discussed. Mecha nisms that may explain the persistence of pain, including neurogenic a nd non-neorogenic inflammation and central sensitization, are also pre sented.
