Rl. Myatt, 3-D STRESS-ANALYSIS OF THE TPX TOROIDAL FIELD-COIL SUPPORT STRUCTURE, IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity, 5(2), 1995, pp. 921-924
A 3-D, coupled, electromagnetic and stress analysis of the Tokamak Phy
sics eXperiment (TPX) toroidal field (TF) coil support structure is pr
esented, The analysis makes use of one-eighth toroidal symmetry to sim
ulate the magnetic field and structural characteristics of the superco
nducting TF and poloidal field (PF) coil systems. Notable extensions t
o past work include the addition of the PP coil set and the coupled el
ectromagnetic and structural solution technique, In this analysis, the
PP coils are included in the magnetic field calculations and attached
to the TF coil structure to simulate the appropriate structural inter
action, The effects of attaching the PP ring coils directly to the TF
coil cases, with no provisions for free radial relative motion, are ev
aluated and discussed. The effects of various PP coil operation points
are also discussed, Stress results are compared to the TPX structural
design criteria to evaluate the general adequacy of the overall desig
n.
