We propose a new method to calculate the second Born amplitude for ele
ctron- or positron-atom collisions, which uses B-spline basis sets. Th
e method is applied to the direct 1s --> 1s and 1s --> 2s transitions
in atomic hydrogen, for which exact second Born results are available.
We find that with a modest amount of computational effort accurate va
lues for the second Born amplitude can be obtained.
