The development of the rolling texture in two phase alpha/beta-brass C
u-40% Zn containing 20 vol.% beta phase was investigated in both phase
s by analysis of the 3-dimensional orientation distribution functions.
The reliability of X-ray texture data was studied. The texture result
s were compared to those of the single phase alloy Cu-37% Zn and to li
terature data. It was found that the development of the fcc alpha phas
e rolling texture is only slightly influenced by the presence of the b
eta phase. In the bcc beta phase weak fibre textures similar to other
bcc materials form. The exact texture development could be interpreted
by means of Taylor deformation-models with increasingly relaxed const
raints. The formation of the recrystallization textures was also deter
mined, the results are presented in Part II of this paper.
