Abstract
Urged on by the life propelling mechanism to grow and guided by the pr inciple to take all relevant considerations into account and tread on a path that is best suited for its survival under a prescribed system of external force vectors, a seedling placed inside the earth gives wa y to a primary root and a main shoot of which the main shoot appears t o defy all common sense by climbing along a route which maximizes the external resistance. The object of the present communication is to pro duce a hypothesis based on experience and intuition on this preferred orientation of the main shoot which is uniformly applicable to the res ults of the experimental observations in various situations that have been noted in the context as yet, and leave the problem of finding a b asis for this 'preferred orientation of the main shoot' to a subsequen t communication for an analytical investigation.
