The problem of the evolution of Rossby waves generated by a spatially
localized external source moving with constant velocity u is studied.
The intensity of the source can change with time harmonically with fre
quency sigma. For large time an asymptotics of the solution of the pro
blem is found valid both-near the source and far from it. This asympto
tics allowed us to disclose the basic properties of the generated wave
s. The cases of standing (u = 0) and moving (u not equivalent to 0) so
urce of steady (sigma = 0) and varying (sigma not equivalent to 0) int
ensity are considered.
