Vi. Zats et Rv. Ozmidov, ON RELATIVE ROLES OF TURBULENT AND ADVECT IVE FACTORS IN THE DISPERSION OF DYE PATCHES IN THE SEA, Okeanologia, 35(3), 1995, pp. 349-355
The relative roles of turbulent and advective factors in the dispersio
n processes in the sea are estimated. The numerous data of diffusion d
ye experiments are used for these purposes. The variability of maximum
dye concentration and the depth of the dye penetration are chosen as
representative criteria of the process. It was found that the contribu
tion of advective factors in the dye dispersion can considerably excee
d the pure diffusion (turbulent) effects in frontal zones, Langmuir ci
rculations, convective regions, near sharp bottom topography variation
s and in the regions with large velocity shear.
