Interaction of piperazine with 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol at ambient temper
ature in methanol yields the salt, piperazine-1,4-diium bis(4,4'-sulfo
nyldiphenolate), C4H12N22+.2C(12)H(9)O(4)S(-), in which pairs of pheno
late anions form cyclic dimers. The cations act as multiple hydrogen-b
ond donors, of both the N-H...O and C-H...O types, which tie these dim
ers into stacks enclosing channels 4.3 Angstrom in diameter.
