Recent experimental measurements on Fe/Cr(211) superlattices (Wang R W
et al 1994 Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 920) show several peaks in the field d
ependence of magnetic susceptibility. We show that the presence of the
se peaks is due to the chaotic nature of the two-dimensional area-pres
erving map by which we determine the equilibrium configuration of the
system. We find a large number of metastable states and that the groun
d state changes abruptly with increasing field, showing the fundamenta
l role played by the discreteness of the lattice.
