Auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) ultra high molecular weight polyeth
ylene has been fabricated by a novel thermal processing route consisti
ng of three stages-compaction, sintering and extrusion. In this paper,
the sintering stage is examined in detail, the processing window inve
stigated and the optimum conditions to produce the microporous microst
ructure necessary for a negative Poisson's ratio are identified. The e
ffects of varying the processing parameters are also studied.
