Abstract
Two-dimensional quantum magnets in which reflection and time-reversal symmetries are broken may be classified by integers which reflect the topology of the ground state. An analogy with the quantum Hall effect exists: these integers are Chern numbers which describe a quantized sp in current response to an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. Impli cations for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking are discussed.
