This is a description of an unusual case of acromegaly in a young fema
le wire-haired dachshound, which occured during diestrus after the fir
st heat. Extrem skin growth in part of neck, body and proximal extremi
ties led to considerable restrictions in movement. Excessive skin fold
s were surgically removed, however during second diestrus skin growth
occured again. Because of the appearence during diestrus with increase
d progesterone levels and the histological findings of the skin, the d
iagnosis acromegaly was made. The diagnosis could not be verified by d
etermination of STH levels because of technical problems. Ovariohyster
ectomy was performed as therapy. The skin growth gradually returned to
normal, a further relapse was not observed.
