Abstract
The field of surface and interface crystallography is reviewed, starti ng with a description of the major experimental techniques. Ordering p rinciples and notation specific to surfaces are introduced. The notabl e trends among the hundreds of solved surface structures are discussed , including: surface relaxations and reconstructions (partly induced b y adsorption), surface segregation, physisorption and chemisorption of atoms and molecules, and multilayer growth.
