An experiment is described in which a waveguide configuration is emplo
yed to test for field chaos. The analysis is based on the identical st
ructures of the equation for the component of electric field of TM mod
es parallel to the guide axis in a metal waveguide and the Schrodinger
equation for a particle confined to an equivalent 2-d quantum billiar
d. It is observed that over a common frequency interval, transmission
through a square guide with one side replaced by a concave section, is
significantly less than transmission through guides with square or re
ctangular cross sections with dimensions comparable to the concave-wal
led guide. This attenuation is attributed to chaotic fields in the con
cave-walled guide.
