Abstract
An analysis is made of the contribution of unresolved 'sources', mainl y active galactic nuclei (AGN), to the high energy diffuse gamma-ray f lux using several approaches. It is shown that the AGN contribution is almost certainly the dominant source of this Aux. The implications fo r the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays-which themselves generat e gamma rays by interacting with the cosmic microwave background-are d iscussed.
