Ad. Erlykin et Aw. Wolfendale, THE HIGH-ENERGY EXTRAGALACTIC GAMMA-RAY BACKGROUND AND ITS RELEVANCE TO THE ORIGIN OF ULTRA-HIGH ENERGY COSMIC-RAYS, Journal of physics. G, Nuclear and particle physics, 21(8), 1995, pp. 1149-1165
An analysis is made of the contribution of unresolved 'sources', mainl
y active galactic nuclei (AGN), to the high energy diffuse gamma-ray f
lux using several approaches. It is shown that the AGN contribution is
almost certainly the dominant source of this Aux. The implications fo
r the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays-which themselves generat
e gamma rays by interacting with the cosmic microwave background-are d
iscussed.
