Teaching in one form or another is of vital importance to most of us i
n the MS/OR community, whether we are in industry, academia, or consul
ting. For the community as a whole, teaching pays many of our bills, i
nforms our current and future clients, and trains our successors. Desp
ite this, teaching is poorly represented in our journals and professio
nal conferences and is often treated as the stepchild of the professio
n. Furthermore, our teaching is under unprecedented critical scrutiny
and is simultaneously undergoing a revolution in methodology. The purp
ose of this column is to provide a forum for the presentation and diss
emination of new and effective approaches to teaching MS/OR. I will co
ntribute an occasional column based on my experiences in teaching MBA
students, and I will also solicit contributions from the many innovati
ve teachers around the world who are, for the most part, laboring in i
solation. I invite you to submit articles on your own ideas and experi
ences, as well as your comments on articles that appear here.
