Five emission lines in the wavelength region 6122-6132 Angstrom in the
spectrum of eta Carinae are identified as the 4d (5)D4f(5)F multiplet
of Mn II. These are the only high-excitation lines of Mn II present i
n the spectrum. The upper levels of the multiplet are most likely popu
lated through photoexcitation by an accidental coincidence in waveleng
th between the ultraviolet multiplets UV 15 of Mn II and UV 5 of Si II
. Improved laboratory wavelengths for the Mn II lines are presented.
