Abstract
The present paper develops the renormalization-group techniques to ana lyze the phase transition between the smectic-A(1) and smectic-A(d) ph ases of liquid crystals. This transition exhibits a bicritical or a te tracritical point, depending upon the number of components (n) of the order parameter. For n less than or equal to 3 an isotropic or Heisenb erg fixed point dominates and gives bicritical behavior. However, for n greater than or equal to 4 a new fixed point, with irrational epsilo n expansion coefficients, becomes stable and describes tetracritical b ehavior. The critical exponents are calculated to first order in epsil on.
