Pk. Mukherjee, RENORMALIZATION-GROUP ANALYSIS OF THE SMECTIC-A(1)-SMECTIC-A(D) PHASE-TRANSITION IN LIQUID-CRYSTALS, Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics, 52(2), 1995, pp. 1743-1747
The present paper develops the renormalization-group techniques to ana
lyze the phase transition between the smectic-A(1) and smectic-A(d) ph
ases of liquid crystals. This transition exhibits a bicritical or a te
tracritical point, depending upon the number of components (n) of the
order parameter. For n less than or equal to 3 an isotropic or Heisenb
erg fixed point dominates and gives bicritical behavior. However, for
n greater than or equal to 4 a new fixed point, with irrational epsilo
n expansion coefficients, becomes stable and describes tetracritical b
ehavior. The critical exponents are calculated to first order in epsil
on.
