Abstract
The probability distribution of the total transmission is studied for waves multiply scattered from a random, static configuration of scatte rers. A theoretical study of the second and third cumulants of this di stribution is presented. Within a diagrammatic approach a theory is de veloped that relates the third cumulant normalized to the average [[T- a(3)]] to the normalized second cumulant [[T-a(2)]]. For a broad G;aus sian beam profile, it is found that [[T-a(3)]] = 18/5[[T-a(2)]](2). Th is is in good agreement with data of optical experiments.
