The reaction of trimesitylindium, Mes(3)In (Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylpheny
l), with diselenides, R(2)Se(2) (R = Me, Ph), at room temperature yiel
ds [Mes(2)In(mu-SeR)](2) (R = Me (1), Ph (2)) and the corresponding se
lenoether, MesSeR. Under similar conditions, the reaction of Me(3)In w
ith Ph(2)Se(2) gives a rearranged product, [MeIn(mu-SePh)(SePh)](infin
ity) (4). [Mes(2)In(mu-SeMes)](2) (3) is obtained by the reaction of M
es(3)In with elemental Se in refluxing toluene. The resulting derivati
ves have been characterized by H-1, C-13, and Se-77 NMR spectroscopy,
and the structures of 2-4 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray
diffraction techniques 2 and 3 form dimeric molecules with planar (In
Se)(2) rings. 4 can be described as a spiral chain composed of alterna
te four-coordinate indium atoms and three-coordinate selenium atoms.
