In this paper are reported Acen and Salean complexes of the Group 13 e
lements in a ligand-to-metal stoichiometry of 1:2. These are unconvent
ional by comparison to previously reported examples (with these ligand
s) which are predominantly of a 1:1 and 1:3 stoichiometry. The Acen co
mplex, Acen(BPh(2))(2) (1) (where AcenH(2) is '-bis(2-hydroxy(methyl)b
enzylidene)ethylenediamine ('common' name)) was isolated as a minor si
de-product in the synthesis of [AcenAl(MeOH)(2)]BPh(4). In a different
type of reaction the monomeric SaleanHAl(Al(NMe(2))(3)) (2) (where Sa
leanH(4) is N,N'-bis(2- hydroxybenzyl)ethylenediamine ('common' name))
is isolated. Crystal data for (1): triclinic, <P(1)over bar>, a 9.701
(3), b 11.116(1), c 11.393(2) Angstrom, alpha 62.84(1), beta 78.99(1),
gamma 79.94(1)degrees, V 1067.6(4), Z 2, with 1032 reflections with F
> 6.0 sigma(F), R = 0.0725. Crystal data for (2): orthorhombic, P2(1)
2(1)2(1), a 12.432(3), b 12.574(2), c 20.024(4) Angstrom, V 3130.3(11)
, Z 4, with 855 reflections with F > 5.0 sigma(F), R = 0.1044.
