A new approach to the estimation of the extent of the inhomogeneous re
gion during the adsorption of a gas on a planar or slightly curved sol
id surface is developed. Relationships are derived that enable the cor
responding calculations to be made for the case of dispersion interact
ions of gases with solids. Numerical estimations of the extent of the
inhomogeneous region for graphite-helium (neon, argon, krypton, xenon,
and methane) systems as a function of temperature are presented.
