This note addresses several issues raised in a 1994 paper by Ramu and
Kennedy. Solid-waste-disposal siting is a complex process that must ta
ke into consideration a varying range of social, political, and enviro
nmental concerns. This note addresses a basic assumption made by Ramu
and Kennedy in siting a waste-disposal facility, which suggests that s
uch a facility can be located along any road linkage of a transportati
on network. The other major issue addressed in this paper is the waste
-site-selection heuristic suggested by Ramu and Kennedy. An alternativ
e solution approach to their heuristic is presented that identifies a
guaranteed optimal solution. In addition to identifying an optimal sol
ution, this alternative solution approach can be used for the selectio
n of p waste-disposal sites.
