Process for emulsification of chlorinated rubber and synthesis of graf
t copolymer of chlorinated rubber and methacrylic acid have been descr
ibed. Effect of monomer concentration (chlorinated rubber: methacrylic
acid) used for grafting on emulsion stability has been discussed. Gra
ft copolymer fraction is separated from homopolymer polymethacrylic ac
id by soxhlet extraction in methanol and percentage of grafting and pe
rcentage grafting efficiency have been calculated from dry weight and
acid value data of the sample before and after extraction: Effect of i
nitiator concentration on percentage of grafting and percentage grafti
ng efficiency has been studied and explained in the light of the mecha
nism of grafting. Graft copolymer has been characterised by Gel Permea
tion Chromatography and IR spectra. The paint based on chlorinated rub
ber emulsion is evaluated as a protective coating with special referen
ce to its acid, alkali, water and humidity resistance.
