H. Wang et al., PERIPHERAL NMDA RECEPTORS CONTRIBUTE TO ACTIVATION OF NOCICEPTORS - AC-FOS EXPRESSION STUDY IN RATS, Neuroscience letters, 221(2-3), 1997, pp. 101-104
By using immunocytochemical techniques, we demonstrated that: (1) unil
ateral injection of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA; 10, 20, 50 mu mol) int
o the plantar aspect of hindpaw of the normal waked rats elicited a do
se-dependent increase of c-fos expression in the superficial laminae o
n the side of the spinal dorsal horn ipsilateral to the injection; (2)
combined injection of MK-801, a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagon
ist, with formalin into the hindpaw could suppress formalin-induced c-
fos expression in the dorsal horn, with a stronger suppression after h
igher doses of MK-801 being injected. These results strongly suggest t
hat NMDA receptors might be located in the membrane of peripheral axon
al terminals of the dorsal root ganglion neurons and might be involved
in the activation of nociceptors. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ireland L
