Anterior interosseous nerve syndrome is a compressive neuropathy of th
e anterior interosseous nerve characterized by partial or total paraly
sis of the flexor pollicis longus, the flexor digitorum to the index f
inger, and the pronator quadratus, with no loss of sensation(9,11) Alt
hough Stern and Kutz listed thirteen possible causes, anterior interos
seous nerve syndrome as the result of a tight dressing was not describ
ed, We report the cases of four patients who had a palsy of the anteri
or interosseous nerve secondary to inappropriate application of cotton
padding for a postoperative cast or splint. These patients were manag
ed during a three-year period at the trauma center at Henry Ford Hospi
tal.
