The Sacred Heart Hospice, Sydney, was founded in 1890 and is the large
st inpatient palliative-care facility in Australia, Patients with adva
nced cancer form the predominant patient group, although patients with
HIV/AIDS account for approximately 20% of admissions. A community-out
reach service, established in 1983, cares for more patients at home th
an in the Hospice. Recently the Hospice has participated in a number o
f clinical trials and intends to become a regional centre for palliati
ve-care research, education and training.
