It has been known for some time that a variety of liver diseases affec
t kidney function, but renal dysfunction associated with orthotopic li
ver transplantation has received scant attention. Although the mechani
sms mediating these abnormalities are incompletely defined, advances i
n the understanding of renal pathophysiology after liver transplantati
on have made it possible to develop new treatment strategies. Aggressi
ve and early intervention to diagnose and treat renal complications as
sociated with liver transplantation should be the goal for transplant
centres.
