Abstract
It is shown that one-dimensional periodic lattices with realistic anha rmonic interaction potentials can exhibit highly localized response to a spatially extended harmonic driving force. There is a wide variety of these driven intrinsic localized modes, and they display interestin g new features. We also report a different type of inhomogeneous mode, characterized by a localized region of amplitude depletion in an othe rwise extended lattice mode and frequencies above the harmonic phonon band.
