Optical spectroscopy of Cr3+ and Nd3+ ions doped in MgO:LiNbO, crystal
s, especially the decay time, was studied at room temperature. Energy
transfer from Cr3+ to Nd3+ was verified. Experimental results reveal t
hat the energy transfer efficiency from Cr3+ to Nd3+ is greatly reduce
d if the concentration of Cr3+ substantially exceeds that of Nd3+ in t
he matrices. It is proposed that Nd3+ concentration quenching increase
s with Cr3+ concentration in Cr,Nd:MgO:LiNbO3.
