Compensation is a complex issue with broad ramifications for both empl
oyer and employee. The pivotal point in the establishment of a compens
ation system is job evaluation. An expert system, a rapidly emerging d
ecision making technology, is applied to the job evaluation area. Vari
ous approaches to job evaluation are discussed. Recently published com
puter-assisted methods for job evaluation are reviewed. The complete p
rocess of designing and developing a Job Evaluation Expert System (JEE
S) and its limitations are discussed. Benefits offered by JEES are ide
ntified and future research opportunities are highlighted.
