Dissolution of an additively coloured alkali halide crystal in an aque
ous peroxydisulphate solution results in the formation of hydrated ele
ctrons and sulphate radicals. These radicals are capable of inducing t
erbium(III) chelate chemiluminescence by fast subsequent redox reactio
ns, where the radiative D-5(4)-->F-7(j) transitions of coordinated ter
bium(III) is based on a chemical excitation of the aromatic ligand by
its interactions with these radicals, which is followed by an intramol
ecular transfer of this excitation energy to the D-5(4) state of terbi
um(III).
