Abstract
Recent research on the application of fuzzy set theory to the design o f control systems has led to interests in decomposition of multivariab le fuzzy systems. Decomposition of multivariable control rules is pref erable since it alleviates the complexity of the problem, but the infe rence error is inevitable because of its approximate nature. In this p aper we show that a large inference error is generated when the Gupta' s decomposition method [1] is applied to Exclusive-nor (ENOR) gate mod el which is used as a counter example. We define an index of applicabi lity which can classify whether the decomposition method can be applie d to a multivariable fuzzy system or not.
