Is. Ionova et al., THE EFFECT OF COVALENT CONTACT BETWEEN SOLVENT MOLECULES AND THE VO(DMSO)(5)(2-STRUCTURE OF THE ION() ION ON THE ELECTRONIC), Russian chemical bulletin, 44(4), 1995, pp. 678-681
The dissolution of the vanadyl complex VO(DMSO)(5)(CLO(4))(2) in alcoh
ols ROH (R = Me, Et, or Pr-II) results in the appearance of a new abso
rption band at 372 nm in the electronic absorption spectra of the vana
dyl ion. The calculation of the OVO52+ ion by the X alpha-scattering w
ave method is carried out to interpret the spectra, It is shown that t
he new band in the spectrum of the VO(DMSO)(4)OHR(2+) complex correspo
nds to the b(2)-->a(1) transition in the OVO52+ ion. However, this tra
nsition is not a pure d-d transition due to strong covalent bonding an
d a significant contribution from the AO 2p of oxygen to the a(1) MO.
The appearance of the new absorption band in the electronic spectra of
the vanadyl complexes is caused by the participation of ligand orbita
ls in bond formation.
