A random block design was used for studying the effect, a the extract
of some plants on sorghum 50 g of the fresh plant material were immers
ed in 500-600 ml of water for 48 hr. Sorghum for 6 hr in the resulting
liquid. In the first test (4 replications) the liquid obtained from p
ure or 50% diluted Cannavalia ensiformis leaves were used; in the seco
nd (6 replications) Bursera graviolens leaves, whole plants of Petiver
ia alliacia and Parthenium hysterophorus was employed. 200 seeds were
placed on humid filter paper in Petri plates. Seeds soaked in these li
quids had a significantly lower germination with respect to the contro
l water treated. This effect could be due to the release of allelopath
ic substances not determined in this study.
