Transmission infrared spectra of three fluorinated phosphonate monomer
s, perfluorovinylphosphonic acid, perfluoroallylphosphonic acid, and p
entafluoroallyldiethylphosphonate, are presented and discussed. Charac
terization of such compounds by infrared spectroscopy is difficult, be
cause considerable overlap occurs between absorptions arising from C-F
stretching vibrations and absorptions arising from phosphonate moieti
es. Detailed band assignments were made on the basis of subtle similar
ities and differences in the structures of the compounds, such as degr
ee of fluorination and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The detailed i
dentification of the absorption bands in the infrared spectra of PVPA,
PAPA, and PADP provided by this report should be of assistance in sub
sequent infrared studies of similar compounds and polymers prepared fr
om them.
